Lessons from the Community Empowerment programme for #bigsociety

John Houghton [@metlines] and I recently wrote a piece for the Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal on the lessons we can learn from the Community Empowerment Programme and Neighbourhood Renewal.

Poverty, power and policy dilemmas, tells the story of the community empowerment programme in England between 2001 and 2008, and offers some thoughts on what we can learn from it in relation to Big Society and Localism. In it we argue that the programme’s aims to empower communities to become equal partners in neighbourhood renewal, was undermined by inconsistent central government policy and opposition from local authorities.

It is a (more or less) academic piece, but I hope it’s still of interest.
